What is Exploding Paste?

Exploding Paste is a compound made from Ammonium Hydroxide and Iodine. It's chemical name is Nitrogen Triiodide. Nitrogen triiodide, also called nitrogen iodide, is the chemical compound with the formula NI3. It is a sensitive contact explosive: small quantities explode with a gunpowder-like snap when touched even lightly, releasing a purple cloud of iodine vapor. NI3 has a complex structural chemistry that has required relatively heroic efforts to elucidate because of the instability of the derivatives.

When wet, the paste is stable, but when it drys, it becomes highly volitile, and even the slightest touch of a feather can set it off. I heard explosions all night long the first night a made it, dry bits got onto leaves and as they blew threw the wind, BOOM!

The resulting explosion is a purple cloud of smoke. No flames or sparks result from the reaction. If you decide to make the paste please be careful and use the proper safty precautions.
